THE BLUESTOCKING SOCIETY
Advocates and mystics

“Unless we ensure equality for everyone – regardless of gender or race – then we merely trade the tyranny of vampires for the tyranny of man.” — Myra Wolfenstein, Vindicating the Rights of Women

The Bluestocking Society is a secret society dedicated to overthrowing the vampire patriarchy and installing a new order with equal economic and legal rights for women. The Bluestockings advocate for underprivileged women throughout Mallean society, helping wives escape brutal husbands (mortal or undead) and educating girls in the arts and sciences. Their goal the self-empowerment.

While the Bluestocking Society began simply with the goal of attaining women’s rights, the leadership of the Bluestockings has followed the natural extrapolation of their convictions to embrace equality for all humans, regardless of gender, race, or creed. The Bluestocking Society rejects slavery and racial inequality; it champions all who rebel against their gender roles, including homosexuals and transsexuals. As the Bluestocking Society insists, it embraces the equality of all humankind.

The Bluestocking Society is the only secret society to have significant numbers of members among the aristocracy. A growing number of noblewomen are becoming dissatisfied with their restrictive place in society as brood mares for dhampyres and tokens of alliances between houses. While some noblewomen have joined the (literal) cult of Salome or the (figurative) cult of personality surrounding the refugee Countess Alžbeta Bátoriová, others have rejected their station altogether and secretly embraced the Bluestocking Society. These members risk much in secretly supporting the revolution; if it is successful, they might very well lose their lives along with the vampires.

The main front for the Bluestockings is the publishing house Minerva Press. The “horrid novels” they publish tell outlandish tales of young women struggling against vampires, werewolves, and other horrors; while the stories always end with societal norms restored, the subversive messages throughout the books have opened a number of young minds to new possibilities.

The Bluestocking Society’s pursuit of self-empowerment has led them to research psionics – the untapped powers of the human mind. More science than mysticism, the study of psionics has enabled the Bluestockings to empower dozens of girls and women across Greater Malleus, enabling them to strike back at their oppressors with nothing more than their own wills. The dangerous psychic backlash that can occur forces psionicists to train and work alone or in very small groups; some way of overcoming this weakness is one of the society’s immediate priorities.

Benefits of Membership
Membership in the Bluestocking Society provides access to a hidden confederacy found throughout Greater Malleus and the Colonies. Sadly, many members not only have to keep their affiliation hidden from the authorities, but also from their own families. A common way for members to recognize each other is by carrying Athena Press novels; when questioned about whether they enjoy the company’s works, a Bluestockings member will reply “Yes, but I never seem to finish them.” Members of the Bluestocking Society receive the following bonus skills and Edge:
+1d4 Investigation
+1d4 Persuasion
Connections (Illuminated) Edge. Since the majority of members of the Bluestocking Society are women and their activities circumscribed by society, a successful Connections roll will prove more useful in providing access to a location or answers to a mystery than summoning combat allies (though a noblewoman or heiress may be able to send her footmen). Many members are expert healers.
